Who is this training for?

This presentation is for practitioners (mental health professionals) in the area of treatment of OCD. In this three-hour online workshop scheduled for Monday, September 8th, 2025, from 4:00 PM UK time (8am California, 11am New York). Designed for qualified and trainee counselors, psychotherapists, and psychologists experienced in working with OCD, this training explores Dr Steven Phillipson’s approach to the treatment of Pure O.

What is behavioral therapy for OCD?

Specifically exposure and ritual prevention (ERP), mindfulness, and psychoeducation.

ERP is a very specialized treatment approach in which an expertly trained clinician provides patients with opportunities to voluntarily face the challenges that their malfunctioning brain have created. ERP involves a collaboration between the patient and the therapist in which exposure based challenges are voluntarily brought about on the patients part repeatedly throughout the day.

Mindfulness is a therapeutic practice in which the patient learns of and develops the discipline of separating the mind prompts from the patient's voluntary capacity to make choices in managing the challenges that the brain produces.

Psychoeducation in the treatment of OCD involved process in which the therapist provides the patient with a ground worth of information in which the patient can understand the rationale for this treatment and the appropriate treatment goals related to the benefits of ERP.

Why this training?

ERP remains the gold standard for the treatment of OCD. For the past 20 years research has clearly indicated that ERP in combination with medication or ERP alone have produced the greatest long-term benefits for successful outcomes in the treatment of OCD.   Although there are recently has been many attempts at creating innovations within the treatment of OCD, these proclaimed innovations tend to do nothing more than distract from the rudimentary basics what is considered the primary change agent in the benefits from ERP.  This training will provide a neurological basis for the rational in using ERP for this complex manifestation of anxiety, guilt, shame, depression, anger, and discussed.

Therapist learning objectives

1) the neurological basis of OCD. Information will be provided regarding hormonal influences in the triggering of OCD and exacerbation of the condition. Rudimentary brain mapping will be discussed in regard to the understanding of the association between anxiety and the irrational thoughts that are produced within the OCD system. The rationale for using ERP as opposed to other cognitive-based treatments, will be explored through the understanding of the mechanisms of the malfunctioning brain.

2) why the term Pure-O in the formulation of identifying a specific subset of OCD sufferers. The specific definition of Pure-O will be discussed and the rationale for why this term is celebrated by OCD patients, and appreciated as a distinction from other subsets of OCD. And why this matters to your clients/patients.

3) although an endless array of themes can be associated with the Pure-O population, a discussion of the 20 most popular subsets of the Pure-O themes will be discussed.  A thorough review of the many different themes within this subset will be presented so that continued ignorance about the many manifestations of OCD can be addressed and set aside.

4) address the specific treatments for the particular ways in which Pure-O can be treated.  Specific interventions, such as index, card, therapy, turning up the volume, capsule time, as well as the spike hunt, and a number of other interventions will be discussed in this section to empower your therapy practice.

5) how specific theme subsets might correspond to a number of different personality styles. The importance of accurate diagnosis of personality, styles, and how treatment design and relational aspects within treatment can be a pivotal part in treatment success

6) the single most important word in regard to the successful treatment of OCD, is the word "irrelevance". An in-depth discussion about the many ways in which irrelevance can be demonstrated to the malfunctioning brain. And how to empower your clients/patients to use this.

The last segment of this presentation will allow participants to ask questions about the material presented. Participants will also be encouraged to present cases within their current treatment, struggles or participants can also ask questions within their own treatment guidelines. Aspects of treatment which might hinder effectiveness of treatment. Lack of effective outcome can include treatment noncompliance, a lack of rapport in the therapeutic relationship and sustained resentment at the activity of one’s own brain in its persistent needs to send these emotional alarm signals.
